    Hi Bill,

I’m not sure where the cracker factory is but there’s a locked car park for PoD members near Grimleys Ponds as below:

You can get to a couple of likely looking pegs very close to Derwent mouth without having to climb over anything from this carpark, just a 15 minute walk or so, could use a barrow.

From Wilne footbridge it’s a bit of a traipse, you’d need to lug your gear over the style at the end of the carpark, the style at the end of the bridge, and at least one more style depending on if you turn left or right after crossing the bridge.

There is some great Barbel fishing to be had upstream and downstream of the footbridge, i know a few good spots. I had several doubles last year including my PB of 12 and a half lbs. But fish do come out in excess of 14lbs.

If you’d like a sherpa let me know and i’ll gladly come with you and help carry your kit and perhaps have a session or two with you.

I’m off work from Thursday this week until the 26th so let me know.

    Hi, RICH D,
Thank you for your extremely kind offer. But I will struggle to traipse any long distance with or without my tackle! So I will have to do a ” Reccy” from Wilne Footbridge car park to see how I can cope. If I decide to give it a try I will scale down how much tackle I take down to the bare minimum, like a roving angler, and use my trusty walking stick! I have been a P.O.D member for a number of years now and I have had quite a few Barbel out on various pegs d/stream of Wilne Footbridge, but quite a way down, upstream of Grimleys Car park. I’ve had plenty In the 6-7- 8 pound range plus a few 9 pounders but never any doubles there & lost some really big fish.
The cracker factory Is on the Wilne car park bank and Is way upstream of the bridge at Borrowash I believe. It got It’s name because the factory used to make and loudly test fireworks, and explosives for the M.O.D I believe, not sure If It still does. When fishing along the stretch opposite be prepared for LOUD explosions disturbing the peace.!
Fishing along the stretch from below the pipe bridge upstream to the full extent of the factory (and further up), Is, In my opinion the VERY best stretch for fishing on the entire River Derwent . FULL of BIG Barbel & specimen fish of other species. Had loads of Barbel average 6-9 pounds, plenty of small ones between 1-3 pounds (they fight like hell) my best PB Is a Barbel of 12pounds 2oz, a 2pound 4oz Perch (fantastic Fish) 5pounds Chub I have lost a few absolute monsters as well (Barbel)
It wouldn’t be fair to mess you about to meet you for a fish as I tend to do things at the spur of the moment and not to fix dates and times, I only fish between 11AM or 12AM to dusk anyway, I don’t do earlies.
So, If you are ever around the Wilne Car Park within the next few months and see an old cogger fishing close nearby with a black walking stick on the ground next to me and using my trusty Drennan Specialist Power Barbel rod with a white fluorescent tip please pay me a call. PHEW!
    Best Wishes,
    Bill.
