Pike in Poysers

I’d really like to run a few jerkbaits in Poysers but of course the rules don’t allow for it, being a float only venue. This would limit pike fishing to deadbaits only and generally speaking, if there is a good head of bait fish available to the pike, they don’t need to scavenge as there is plenty of naturals for them and deadbaiting can be poor.
I’d love to pike fish in Olvers and Pride too (I am a premium member) however again the rules stop this with the premium lakes being boilie and pellet only. Really disappointing as I’ve seen a few good doubles in Olvers but not allowed to fish for them! Not what you’d expect from a fishing club is it?!

I share your concerns of the number of pike in the Grimshaws lake – but the answer is not so easy because as you remove one Pike another smaller more hungry one takes its place – if the balance of Predator and food source is disturbed i.e. reduced number of roach the bigger pike turn on the smaller pike for their diet.
You cannot change nature – the number of roach in this lake is massive hence the number of Pike to maintain the balance –
As for the EA rules on taking fish – this is their rule but they do not the waters – we do – we make the rules and we don’t like the killing fish of any type – hence our rules – as for Poysers we have regular netting – or electric fishing to remove any pike – we will plan for this again this year. In a small water like Poysers it’s a lot easier to remove any larger pike but even their you cannot get them all so it will be an ongoing issue. One positive point about Pike is that they they generally only take damages or sickly fish and so therefore keep the water healthy.

The pike in Poysers at present are not a significant problem – and we plan regular netting and electric fishing for removal of large carp and Pike which in Poysers is possible.

With respect to Pike fishing on Olvers and Pride lake i know of no rule that prevents this – if you wish to dead bait or lure fish on either of these as a premium ticket holder then please go ahead.
Please be considerate to the carp anglers present.

As for the rules of baits to be used this is intended to be with respect to carp fishing and as with the wording of any rules can have unintended interpretations and it seem this is one of them – please pike fish using the methods noted above.

Thank you for the clarification Alan. I doubt very much I’d be lure fishing as there is always someone on the lakes carp fishing but being allowed to deadbait gives new opportunities when the river is in flood.

Thank you for the response, and clarification of the clubs stance on fish removal.
I feel that if the status quo remains on Grimshaws, you will get fewer silver fish anglers on the water for the reasons that I have previously explained. It will become another water dedicated to the Carp angler, with the occasional Pike angler for the colder months.
Silvers anglers already struggle to fish Grimshaws in warmer months due to the pegs being occupied for up to 72 hrs.

You make a valid point that a Pike will generally only take weak or injured prey. But the Roach we hook are neither of these.
We do not want to hook, and play a healthy fish toward the net, only for it to be grabbed by these opportunistic Pike, cleverly looking for an easy meal.

On Poysers, perhaps one of the retention nets can be used to keep the Pike in for the Club to transfer, should one be caught, as it is not allowed without authorisation ?

I would agree with your sentiments of pike in Grimshaws if it was restricted to this water only but pike predation takes place in all of our waters – I fish the Trent and the Ully Gully and have good quality roach taken by Pike – it’s very annoying and upsetting but not something the club can do anything about – On Poysers which is far easier to manage Pike are removed when caught by persons authorized to make transfers.

Pike are a natural predator and maintain the balance of fish population in any water – at present the population of roach in Grimshaws is massive – all feeding on high protein baits put in by Carp anglers at weekends – this water at present is very healthy and long may it continue.
