After 50+ years I scratched my long standing itch to fish the canal again yesterday. Started off with mag and wag down the middle and caught a fish first cast whilst establishing the depth. Somewhere between 30 and 40 fish followed, skimmers up to the pound mark, perch from finger length to around 12 oz. and mostly small roach. However, my last fish was a chub weighing 4 1/2 lbs. caught on feeder fished luncheon meat against the far bank vegetation My biggest mistake was choice of peg below Swarkestone lock, whilst productive the first peg at the end of the mooring was subject to boats travelling upstream angling in to within touching distance when tying up to operate the lock, but I will know next time. My appetite is whetted and I might get another visit or two in before the boat traffic really hots up.
