As Ian says fishing the bank with your back towards olvers/pride lake is a good place to start and I have seen a few captures come from this side of the lake. The only reason I can think anglers have been cut off is because they are fishing knowingly or unknowingly over the back of the gravel bar which is approx 8-9 rod lengths from the bank. If you look on google earth you can see the bar and where it ends which is roughly opposite the peakaboo swim (1st swim in the main trees). This is what they call the start or end of ham bush alley whichever way you want to look at it :-). Ambush alley is a good producer of fish and from what I can work out the fish spend a good section of the middle of the year patrolling this area.
This year they spawned on the bar straight out from the point as they did last year, they have been know to spawn in the shallows in the NE corner of the lake and some spawning activity was seen in this area this year also. Prior to spawning I know the bar area out from the point was producing some fish but captures where also noted from the high bank swims where water comes in from the silt pond.
Last year a lot of captures I know of, seen and captured myself came from the NE corner/shallows and also the bay on the Trent bank where the inlet/outlet is to and from ulley gulley in fact on of my captures from this bay produced a stunning 37lb 3oz common (2nd capture from the lake and my target fish :-)). The same fish came out two weeks later at 38lb 10oz from one of the shallows peg and on the same bait so it had obviously been on the munch 🙂
That same fish has been out quite regular over the past 18 months, I’d say at least 6 to 8 times so it does like its bait. As for fish stock in this water, I’d be guessing but 60ish at a push. I know for sure there is a few 20+ fish and nice ones at that! not 100% sure on the 30+ front maybe 2 or3. I know it has lost a 30+ common in the last 18 months and I was probably the last person to photograph it with its captor but it died about 6 months later.
From my knowledge there is a few very nice linear and half linear fish as I know the captors and I have had one myself at 19lb 10oz.
Ghosties, from my knowledge there was 3….2 commons and a mirror. The little common was around mid double, I say was cause that died just after spawning this year. The big ghost common at mid 20 is still fighting fit as far as I know and gives a right good scrap and fights well as I did hook it from the point swim earlier this year fishing on the surface but it did me in the snags :-). The mirror ghostie is about 18lb from memory and I do have a nice phot of it.
As for the big mystical mirror, who knows for sure….I don’t but I have had it on good word that it exists and I have been shown a photo claiming to be it but until I see it on the bank in my or someone else’s net then I just hope for all that fish redhouse.
There also resides some big cats in there, one in the 30’s, 40’s and 60’s and I have had reports of a kitten around mid double. Cats are definitely present as I have photos 🙂
