Thanks Ian, I’ve got it now. Much appreciated and happy Xmas to you.

Is this bit from my previous message accurate Ian?

“(I think that….) worms, bread, sweetcorn, plastic baits are also ok as hookbaits on all waters. I take it that that sweetcorn (as a particle) is not allowed as feed on Olvers and Pride but is ok to use as feed on other waters”

I thought not Ian. Thank you.

Thank you both and merry Chrimbo.

So if Numpty’s assumptions are correct we can use maggots as hookbaits on all waters, including a pride and Olvers. We might also be able to use maggots in moderation as feed on all waters as you suggest that only “excessive” use was banned. That seems different to the rules posted on the website, which say that
maggots are not allowed at all on Olvers and Pride. It is news to me, but I’m ok with that.

Good to know that worms, bread, sweetcorn, plastic baits are also ok as hookbaits on all waters. I take it that that sweetcorn (as a particle) is not allowed as feed on Olvers and Pride but is ok to use as feed on other waters.

    Unless I’m still misunderstanding anything?

Thank you for your reply Numpty.

The news article you pointed out is helpful and I hadn’t spotted it before. It says particles are only banned as feed. So presumably I can use bread, sweetcorn, worms, artificial corn as hook bait.

However I don’t think maggots are permitted as a hook bait on all lakes as I can see that rule 35 says “the use of Maggots “of any form” are not permitted on the Pride and Olvers Lakes at any time”. I am taking from this that I can use maggots on Grimshaws an Redhouse.

However if ive misunderstood I’d be happy to be corrected as I will respect the rules which I’m sure have been brought in with fish welfare in mind.

I can see that these questions are being addressed in another post on the forum. So to avoid duplication I’ll follow that one with interest. Good to know you are on the case.

Thanks Ian. It’s great to hear that the kingfishers are seen each year on Olvers. Yet another reason to keep visiting. Will look out for those tree creepers and the water rail that you meantioned as well.

Strictly speaking this photo is not from a Pride water but one I took on the Trent near Attenborough Nature Reserve a few weeks ago. However I thought I’d post it as I’ve been watching a kingfisher fly over kiddy’s corner on Olvers this afternoon. It circled around several times, sometimes landing on the far bank. I’m not sure if it has nested nearby. Anyway it is a thing of beauty and well worth keeping an eye out for.

Just had this massive perch out of Olvers. Well over 20lb. Think it might be a lake record.

Hi Ian, I got my rods out for the first time this year and did a couple hours on Olvers this afternoon. Result a 31lb mirror. And it’s definitely warming up. Spring is here and it’s great to be back on the banks.

There was also a small flock of reed buntings picking up food spilled from the feeder.

The bird feeder on the Grimshaws corner of Olvers seems very popular. In the five minutes I was watching there were robins, dunnock, great tits, long tailed tits and these blues tit and chaffinch queueing up to eat. Good to see them getting a helping hand to make it through the winter.

Very pleased with this one. My first time out this year – just a few hours on Olvers and was lucky enough to land this lovely mirror in its winter colours – just under 31lb. Great start to the season so excuse the cheesy grin! Thanks to my neighbours for weighing and photographing the fish,

Hi Ian, thanks for the encouraging comments about the photos. I’m a bit of a fair weather fisherman myself (lightweight) so will probably wait until it’s a bit milder to get the rods out again. Respect to the two guys on Olvers last night who said they’d done overnighters in -6 degrees last week and one just had a brolly!

For now I’m still enjoying the occasional stroll round the complex, appreciating nature and waiting for those big carp to start crashing out again.
